Lada Wilson - SOUTH

LADA WILSON | SOUTH – an exhibition documenting an artistic investigation of the term ‘SOUTH’ and the many notions it conveys.

It is inspired by the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther, its rich history, intriguing exhibition programme and, simply, the museum’s geographical position – on the shoreline, facing south. For Lada Wilson the concept of ‘south’ and the many notions it conveys is as inspirational as are the exhibits in the museum.

South is often experienced as a far away place, warm, different …. we have to sail the seas to reach those places in the south. Wilson has spent more than half of her life living in the south. Use of words and languages, typical for her art practice, led her to a create an acronym - Sometimes Our Uttermost Thoughts Hover – SOUTH which closely relates to the precariousness of life fishing families endure. But it could also have a more contemplative tone: yearning for sun and warmth that some place in the south could offer. Wilson explored the potential of the materials she used, pushing them playfully to develop in unexpected ways.

This exhibition could be seen as collection within museum collection with a multidisciplinary approach and it includes photography, digital prints, collages, kiln-fired glass and ceramics. A new body of work responds to the term ‘south’ and to exhibits at the Scottish Fisheries Museum. Responding to the specific gallery space in the museum, each display cabinet could be seen as an art installation, a tableau with its own story. As such, placed in a windowless gallery in the heart of the museum this exhibition aims to evoke contemplation. Perhaps ceramic letters depicting names of one of boats that sailed from Anstruther harbour could become vessels that take you to a place in the south, or you might just let your thoughts hover…
