The Boats Club volunteers are from all walks of life and share the desire to help preserve these important and rare examples of our maritime heritage.
Throughout the year club members meet three mornings each week at the Museum Boat Yard from 9am. There is always routine maintenance work to be done in addition to restoration work along with preparations for the sailing season. During the summer months, club members sail the boats to harbour events such as RNLI days, Sea Food and Wooden Boat Festivals around the coast of Scotland and Northern England. The public are welcomed aboard REAPER to see what life might have been like over 100 years ago. What was once the fish hold is now full of artefacts and photographs of a way of life long gone. The crew are available to assist and provide information to our guests during their visit. The boats rely on donations from the public with all the money going towards the maintenance.
Over the years, thousands of people including many school and community groups have visited and had the opportunity to learn and share about life and work aboard REAPER and WHITE WING.
New volunteers are always welcome: all that is required is a willingness to work with others in bringing your own skills and enthusiasm to the wide variety of tasks necessary for the continued success of the Boats Club.
