The arrival of steam power around the start of the 20th century meant that the fleets were no longer at the mercy of the wind, could travel further and they could catch more fish. In this gallery there are fine models of steam drifters and steam trawlers, photographs, and artefacts ranging from personal gear to ship’s instruments, lights, and a galley stove. There is a reconstruction of a boat’s cabin (complete with bunk-beds to try!) and John Grierson’s 1930s documentary “The Drifters” can be viewed.
