A research project led by the Scottish Fisheries Museum

Phase One – the East Neuk

An understanding of the maritime history of Scotland is vital to a broader appreciation of the economic, political and social development of the country. In documenting the fishing industry, the Scottish Fisheries Museum is playing a role in preserving and interpreting one aspect of this maritime heritage.

Recognising that vernacular harbours can be investigated as a microcosm of the maritime past, the museum has created a research project to investigate these harbours, their surrounding buildings and associated communities. This multidisciplinary project will be led by a number of professional historians who will research a number of inter-related themes.

The first phase of the investigation will concentrate on the harbours of the East Neuk of Fife. However, this will be a long-term project and the eventual aim is to create a template which can be exported to other East of Scotland institutions or groups with related interests. Throughout the term of the project we will publish the results of research on this site and hold events and talks on relevant themes.
